Daren Klum is the CEO and Co-founder of CRAM Worldwide, a revolutionary digital delivery platform that offers unrivaled content capacity with unbreakable security. The CRAM security platform exceeds Department of Defense NSA Type 1 security. Accordingly, CRAM eliminates digital piracy and appeals to even the most risk-averse content providers.
CRAM Worldwide evolved when I had an “ah ha” moment. That moment for me was when a friend of mine told me a Petabyte hard drive would be coming in a few years. A Petabyte is a million gigabytes of data that fits in the palm of your hand. Putting that into perspective, that’s the entire catalog of iTunes and Netflix in your pocket with no Internet needed. That’s also your companies datacenter in your pocket. When I heard about the enormous capacity in hard drives my head started spinning with all the creative ideas and limitless possibilities. The ultimate inspiration was delivering education and entertainment to the 68% of the world’s population that doesn’t have a digital content solution.
We are game-changing in many ways. For the content publisher, we have eliminated the piracy and digital theft problem that has been plaguing the industry for years. Digital piracy represents one of the greatest challenges of our decade and our approach solves the problem. For the consumer, the tradeoff of “locked down content” means we can place more of their favorite movies, music and education with them wherever they go (free of connections). For the business consumer, we can prevent data leakage and offer new ways to back up, store, deliver and distribute digital content. The whole idea we have of “portable and personal clouds” will change the world.
I define innovation as the magical moment when creative ideas materialize to solve big problems. I believe “true” innovation is important because we can’t advance as a society without finding better and more efficient ways of doing things. Innovation has always been the driving force behind any advancing civilization. Innovation plays a key role to our company and we never stop trying to find better ways of doing things. As a digital delivery and security platform we constantly strive to improve and creatively define new ways of approaching market challenges. We will never stop!!
I see big innovations coming for the entertainment industry. The cloud and IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) will give way to “on-demand everything” like what CRAM is doing with localized (wireless) high-capacity secure storage. CRAM will also be a part of this future by eliminating digital piracy. I see huge advances coming in human - computer interaction using voice, touch and gesture recognition in one easy-to-use platform (not multiple platforms). I also believe we will see the beginnings of mind controlled devices. Researches have already demonstrated computers can be navigated simply by thinking of what you want to do. In ten years, that technology will get perfected and I believe we will be able to drive our devices simply by thinking about what we want. I also believe we are in the early stages of social entertainment and the systems that connect each of us will continue to get easier, faster and more capable. I also believe we are on the cusp of a virtual reality movement whereby any surface - walls, tables, and even floors - can become interactive, touchable surfaces. Imagine walking up to a wall at an airport and instantly using the surface as a monitor to check email. Imagine going to Starbucks and not needing your iPad because you have a data stick that allows you to use the table as a large touch screen and when you are done you just leave. These are the kinds of innovations coming and they will change how we access, view and use data.
Unlike some entrepreneurs, I don’t believe the government needs to do anything to help companies like mine. I believe in free markets and if anything, the government needs to get out of the way of business by reducing over-regulation and lessening the tax burdens on start-ups. I think we need to get back to following U.S. Constitution that outlines the role of government:
· To form a more perfect union,
· To establish justice,
· To insure domestic tranquility,
· To provide for the common defense,
· To promote the general welfare, and to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.
